Baked Apple

Ingredients:

(Makes 6 Apples)

  • 6 firm eating apples
  • 1/3 cup raisins
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tsp cinnamon
  • 4 sheets of puff pastry
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • organic heavy cream
  • optional: 1/3 cup chopped walnuts
 

As the cool, crisp days of fall come around, nothing is more comforting than the aroma of warm spices and baked apple wafting from the kitchen! Welcome the changing seasons and celebrate fall's most abundant fruit with this delightfully rustic Baked Apple recipe.

Wrapped in puff pastry, the Baked Apple is not only impressive, but a deceptively simple dessert to make. Serve it at the end of your next dinner party, and we guarantee oohs and ahhs! 

Because this recipe is so simple, it allows for plenty of flexibility. Try mixing in your favorite nut like walnuts, hazelnuts or pecans in with the raisins, or add another spice like nutmeg to your cinnamon sugar mix. You can also try substituting honey for the sugar for a lighter touch. To step up the topping a notch, you can even try a creme anglaise.

 

Instructions:

  1. Place the raisins in a bowl, cover with water and allow to soak for 30 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 375°F and peel and core the apples. Store them in a clean bowl until needed.
  3. In a medium sized bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon until well combined.
  4. Roll each apple carefully in the cinnamon sugar mix until coated.
  5. Fill each apple core with soaked raisins. If you’re adding nuts, add them now too.
  6. Cut your puff pastry into 6 rectangles, measuring approximately 5 x 8″ and place each apple in the center of one rectangle.
  7. Wrap the apple in puff pastry, using a brush and some water to help it stick.
  8. Cut 2 tbsp of butter, and divide into 6 parts. Place the small pad of butter on top of the soaked raisins.
  9. Finish by covering the pastry with egg wash and placing them on a tray lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden in color.

Serve warm and top with plenty of fresh cream!
